The Olwyn Ramsey Archives is the research section of Te Ahu Museum. The archives hold an impressive collection of local and family history records and is available to researchers to access and use.

  • Cemetery transcriptions
  • School records
  • Shipping information
  • Church registers – Anglican and Methodists records.
  • Journals, diaries and personal papers of prominent missionaries and pioneer families.
  • Photographs – many thousands of photographs from Kaitaia and Far North photographers which include the Northwood Collection, Linwood Studios, Lou Hobson Collection and Hi Lite studios collection.
  • Local newspaper archives – Northland Age.

Fees and Charges

Archives research visit $10 per day, $30 per week (5 days)
Museum staff research $25 per 30 min or $50 per hour
First 15 minutes is free

Image and photographic reproductions
Digital prints for research and private use only
Email: $30 (1-3 images) + additional $5 per image
Mail: $7 for USB stick + image costs

Image and photographic reproductions
Commercial use of images incurs a commercial fee of $150 per image, per reproduction and written permission from the museum.

Document scanning service
We can scan and email unrestricted and unpublished documents i.e. school rolls, registers, dairies.
Documents: $10 (1-3 scanned) + 1 per scan thereafter.

Education / Ako

School learning programs

Our programmes are designed to embody our vision to be a hive of learning, discovering and creating. We will work with you to ensure we are meeting the learning goals and desired outcomes for your students.

Session times:
• Our first onsite learning session starts at 10am
• Up to four 1-hour sessions can be delivered in a day
• A maximum of 30 students can attend a session
• Session start times are 10 am, 11am, 12 pm and 1pm
• All programmes are finished promptly by 3 pm.
• 1.5 – 2 hour session can be offered for older students

Cost:
45 minute – 1 hour session = $3 per student*
1.5 – 2 hour session = $5 per student*

Self-guided visit

You may wish to visit the museum and empower your students to undertake an activity that you have created specifically for them. We have resources available to support you with this.

Session times:
• Self-guided visits begin at 10.30am.
• Most schools depart the Museum by 3 pm.
• Please confirm gallery availability with the bookings team.
• Allow approximately 30-60 minutes for self-guided groups.

Group Visits / Tirotiro

Groups can book a tour of the museum and archives led by our knowledgeable staff. From early natural history of the region to early Maori settlement and colonial history the team will work with you to tailor the tour for your group.

Taonga Tuku Haere / Treasures without Boundaries

Bringing the museum experience out into classrooms and community spaces is the premise for the Taonga Tuku Haere outreach programs.

Taonga in Classrooms (Classroom Learning)

Taonga Tuku Haere are curated handling objects that provide learners with the opportunity to connect with the museum’s unique collections in your own classroom. Each case contains specimens to inspire discovery, stimulate enquiry and promote discussion and connections to students’ environment from within the classroom.

Taonga in Community Spaces (Community Outreach)

Taonga Tuku Haere are also curated objects in collaboration between the museum and community interest groups that allow stories to be told with the museum’s unique collections in community spaces like marae, libraries and other community facilities.
